about

This was the second Ebb rehearsal during the Jefferson Street era. During this time we only had one day per week to practice, only for four hours, so we learned to focus, and quickly. This session revives four songs from 10/7, along with the first attempts at "Million Million" and "White-Wash", two of our most-played songs. The takes are tentative but tight. You can already tell these were keepers.

This set also features our last pass at "The Sun And The Moon And The Stars", which is unfortunate. At this point in its life, this song had a most obnoxious, key-rising ending that went on forever. It was powerful but too much. Rather than rework the ending we moved on to other songs and left this one in the vault. It happens. This still went on to become one of my most requested songs but, if we had handled it correctly, Ebb could have brought the house down with that song. This particular version features a Pete Mason solo that further solidifies his status as the most badass guitarist ever. I applaud everyone in the band for actually nailing those insane changes at the end. It is ridiculous but amazing at the same time.

Some songs appear more than once, and some takes are incomplete. Rather than just present the highlights I decided to include it all (aside from the chatter and noodling). It is interesting to hear how the songs grow, even in the course of the same session.

This session is raw and ragged but it is full of vigor and is one hell of a showing for material that was still so new. That was the beauty of this band. I could throw anything at them and they would immediately crush it. That is a rare thing and one of the reasons why I am eternally grateful for these recordings.

about

Chris Anderson - BG Alexandria, Virginia

Bootleg Records is my way of organizing recordings that wouldn't be considered for release on the Flying Dachshund Music label. Songwriting demos, outtakes, live sets, band projects, pseudonym projects, and experimental sessions are what can be found on the BG label, The kind of stuff that would be bootlegged. What started out in 2005 as a limited run of 20 titles has grown to 200 and counting.... ... more
