about

Being in the DC area, hurricanes don't hit us often. But when they do they really pack a wallop. Such was the case in September 2003, when Hurricane Isabel ravaged the area and left us a wasteland, at least for a while. My old neighborhood, in Belle View, was flooded to the point that the first floor of pretty much every house was ruined. Old Town Alexandria was also not spared a drop and my store, Olsson's Books & Records, featured five feet of water at one point, and so many books & records were destroyed in the mess. Trees were down everywhere and power was out, in some places, for a week or more.

It did not take long for the power to go out at home and, with nothing else to do, I fired up the old handheld cassette recorder and just started playing through songs, with only a candle to provide light. I went through a handful of classics & oldies, as well as a few covers and even some improvised songs, but mostly I stuck to songs that were recent at the time. And so there are tons from albums such as Spontanuity, What It Is, Kitestrings...andotherthings and The Last Of The Hyenas, as well as several from The Crown and Waiting For The Wolves, which were in the process of being recorded at the time.

This has long been a contender for the BG label and I don't know why it's taken until now to finally release this. Now, on the 20th anniversary of this session, I can sit and think about how every one of these songs is so dear to my heart. And I can sit and think of just how many songs have come into being in the time since (which would boggle even the most logical mind). Mostly, I can sit and think about how much my life has changed in two decades that have since passed. And, yet, I can hear this recording and be immediately transported back to that stuffy, smoky basement and the sound of debris slamming into the back of the house. Good times.

about

Chris Anderson - BG Alexandria, Virginia

Bootleg Records is my way of organizing recordings that wouldn't be considered for release on the Flying Dachshund Music label. Songwriting demos, outtakes, live sets, band projects, pseudonym projects, and experimental sessions are what can be found on the BG label, The kind of stuff that would be bootlegged. What started out in 2005 as a limited run of 20 titles has grown to 200 and counting.... ... more
