So the story goes....in the summer of 1993, I was starting work on what would have ended up being my third album, Aran Fog And Green. The primary focus of that album was a five-song suite that all ran together and was totally spaced out and experimental. It was shaping up to be pretty amazing but, due to many different reasons, the project was abandoned and not actually completed until 2019.
Along with that song cycle were these other two songs - "Say Hello" and "Undertow". Despite being recorded at the same time, those tracks sounded completely different and did not fit at all with the album, as it was. Eventually I got the idea to release those tracks as a single. The only problem was that, even though "Undertow" was a killer track and a staple of my band, Carpe Diem, "Say Hello" was the catchier of the two and definitely the a-side. HOWEVER, the song didn't actually have proper lyrics, aside from the chorus. The vocal on the recording was just gibberish. The plan was to write lyrics and replace the track before the single came out, but I could never write anything beyond the first two lines of the song. In fact, it took 22 years before it finally happened. And then, when it did, the entire lyric came to me in about fifteen minutes.
From there, I recorded a demo of the revamped "Say Hello" and decided it would be fun to jam through the rest of the single as well. So I blasted through "Undertow" and arranged a version of the wildly experimental second b-side, "(No Room On) Grayson Street". The original single featured a re-recording of "The Yammering Song" as a hidden track. That song was a few years old at the time, and I had just rediscovered it. For this session, however, I ran through a take of "Fragile Bones", which had just been discovered, in sketch form, on an old cassette. That song had been rewritten (it would later go on to be a single) and so I ran through that as well. The CD version of this particular set does not list that song on the cover, so it keeps the "hidden track" theme alive.
I will not venture to say that, even in its finished form, "Say Hello" is any sort of masterpiece but, damn, am I glad it's finally done.

Bootleg Records is my way of organizing recordings that wouldn't be considered for release on the Flying Dachshund Music
label. Songwriting demos, outtakes, live sets, band projects, pseudonym projects, and experimental sessions are what can be found on the BG label, The kind of stuff that would be bootlegged. What started out in 2005 as a limited run of 20 titles has grown to 200 and counting.......more
