about

I recorded my first album, Dialects, in October 1992. Even though it is lo-fi and totally trashy, it was still a huge step for me and I was very happy with the concept. Immediately, I set my sights on a follow-up. Originally the plan was to try and get as many people as possible to contribute to the record (a plan that I have had many times over the years, and a plan that has never once panned out). The problem was - I didn't really have any songs for the album. I had a few songs laying around, and then I wrote a bunch of lyrics with the intent to set them to music and then proceed with the album.

Unfortunately, the majority of those songs turned out to be really bad. It took a very long time before I was able to set music to an existing lyric, and the only one that really worked out was "Take The Sun And Sing", which went on to be a standard in my repertoire for a number of years. That didn't stop me from getting started on the project. This set collects all of the demos that were recorded for the album, which was to be titled Chinatown. I was underwhelmed by many of the songs but still pressed forward, as the songs could have been solidified during the recording process.

I started the tracking for the album with a fiery song called "This Is The Last Time" but the recording turned out so bad, so distorted, so messy, that I totally lost heart and abandoned the project. Which was a blessing, since I really didn't have much to work with.

Three months later, I stumbled upon inspiration and wound up with a bunch of songs that wound up forming the basis for Welcome To Dreamtown - my actual second album, and my first real creative "triumph". Two songs from the Chinatown sessions wound up making the cut - "This Is The Last Time" and "Wind", while "Take The Sun And Sing" was revisited for my third album, Dreamora, and went on to be one of the cornerstones of the Carpe Diem repertoire. The rest of these songs, however, will stay right here where they belong.

about

Chris Anderson - BG Alexandria, Virginia

Bootleg Records is my way of organizing recordings that wouldn't be considered for release on the Flying Dachshund Music label. Songwriting demos, outtakes, live sets, band projects, pseudonym projects, and experimental sessions are what can be found on the BG label, The kind of stuff that would be bootlegged. What started out in 2005 as a limited run of 20 titles has grown to 200 and counting.... ... more
